In order to achieve the highest level of performance, every athlete needs to work towards two types of goals simultaneously—outer physical goals and inner mental goals. If your training grid doesn’t specify BOTH goals IN WRITING, along with a PLAN to get there, you’re not embracing or conditioning the whole athlete. Why is this standard of thinking uncommon? Coaches may need to follow institutional guidelines prohibiting them from getting too “personal” or diving in too deep. They may be uncomfortable discussing emotions and feelings; they may not have enough time to go there; or, they don’t know how to tackle a wide variety of mental challenges. It’s a messy tightrope and every athlete is different.
